Adding locations almost daily. Will update as soon as I have the information available.
Would you like your location added as a place to sign this petition? Simply leave a reply at the bottom of this page with : Business Name, your name, hours available for signatures, address, phone number, website.
Do you already agree with our cause? Do you own a business? Do you enjoy giving back to the community?
Because this cause is more than just about getting signatures, if you want relatively free advertising, and are willing to give 10% of your proceeds from a single day to a local charity, let me know, because I’m planning around 5 signing days, which I’d be willing to have at your location in coordination with your charitable giving.
I’ll have one at my store! Animal Lodge 3201 S western, Amarillo, TX 79109
Thank you!
Michelle Knevelbaard
Thanks, Michelle! You’re doing all of us a great favor.
I support the cell phone ban. People that talk while driving dont drive safe and increase their chances of being in a wreck
Justin, I agree. People that talk with other people in the vehicle, or to pets in the car, or on a bluetooth, or on a cell phone, or to OnStar, or to themselves, increase their chances of being in a wreck.
I’ll sign
Sara, thank you for joining, hopefully one of the locations available are easy for you to sign at, or we’re planing a few signing days in the future, we’re just deciding if before or after the election.
put one on the east side of town, Tradewind area for ex.,pls.
I appreciate your input. No one from that area has volunteered to be location as a place to sign. I’ll keep you posted if you have added your email to the top right of this page.
already signed. Hope you run for city office next election.
Let’s keep our right to choose for ourselves, we don’t need the city, state, and national governing bodies to keep us safe. We all have brains and should have the right to use them.
I agree with you Jan B. We all do have brains and should be smart enough not to talk or text while driving a car. I already know people who have died while texting. If someone kills one of mine because they were texting or talking while driving, they will wish it had been themselves instead.
But if it’s someone drinking and driving, or any of the other 15 higher causes of wrecks than texting, you’ll be ok with it? I don’t wish anyone to die, but I also don’t wish the government to mandate morality, especially in the case of banning cellphone use which increases dangers on the highway.
Well that was an idiotic reply. Of course I’m not ok with it. Are you? How does banning cell phone use, increase dangers on the highway? Really? That is laughable.
According to the IIHS study published recently, in almost all cities where texting and / or cell phone use was banned, wrecks increased. The reason they found, is many people will still do it, but now in a manner which is not safe, but also out of view of police. This is why bans increase dangers on the highway. I agree with you though, people should use their best judgement when driving, and if able to talk on the phone and drive safely, they should be able to.
There are 15 higher reasons for wrecks than phone use, and bluetooths do not decrease distraction, but have almost an equal distraction to a general conversation, or hand held use. This study was published by the same organization the City cites for their ban, the National Traffic Safety Board. So while I agree with educating the public to the dangers of being distracted, bans in the majority, never work as intended. And allowing bluetooths to be used just keep the danger level with the added benefit of increased sales.
As an owner of a small mobile tech business this could effect my business in a severe way. We are cloud based otherwise there would be one of these petitions right next to my desk. If local business means anything to you, this could have drastic effects on us, please sign as soon as you can! We deserve the right to make these decisions for ourselves!
Why can you not use a hands free device Michael? I use them. Also as a business owner, I do not allow my employees to endanger the general public by texting or using cell phones while driving unless they are hands free.
David, you have the right as a business owner to demand employee compliance. That’s something I admire. Why don’t more businesses do this? It’s the point of the city mandating this, without the research to substantiate it. There’s a major difference in the two.
I do use hands free and voice control while driving. I do not allow any of my employees or subcontractors on the road without a Bluetooth if they are working for me. After discussing the bill with a city official after writing this post as well as reading a portion of the submitted bill I feel my opinions may have been a knee jerk reaction to the limited details and information available at the time. As long as this bill does not allow an officer to ticket based on using these devices at his digression I don’t have an issue with the regulation itself, but I still feel this should have been voted on rather than implemented.
We own an asian food restaurant on the east side of Amarillo Blvd and we got a lot of different customers daily and it may help you a lot to get signatures, we volunteer to be a signing location at: Ly’s Cafe, Hours – Tuesday – Sunday 11:00 am – 10:00 pm, we close on Mondays, 5615 E Amarillo Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79107, (806) 383-1569
PLEASE ban texting and driving, AND get law enforcement to comply.
My understanding is that exemptions are for extenuating circumstances only, and they apply to the general public in such circumstances as well. Although I realize this is open to interpretation, I do believe a VERY carefully worded exemption should be in the ordinance, and that ALL state and local officials should set an example and be made to comply. It would be nice to have a link to a full transcript here if anyone knows where to find it.
I should clarify; I am against the casual use of ANY device that can not be used HANDS FREE while driving. My opinion is that any organization that would like contact with their employees while driving should provide them with devices that are hands free enabled.
I would go into detail, however, I personally don’t want to try to convince anyone they need to be against a ban of any type like this, because then the whole point is lost. To find the text of the ordinance go here, and the fact that although we assume safety is greater with bans, the facys just don’t agree.
